The beginning of the way

Lord Buddha really left his hometown. Really contemplated under the tree of wisdom. Really taught in Benares. Indeed, he graduated from his Teaching in Kushinagar, but centuries have added many fables.

Vladyka left his hometown on horseback, accompanied by a servant sent. The road lay northwest along the river valley. Two weeks went on an accelerated path. When the mountain passes passed, the horse trail ended, the hunting trail led further.

Here the servant appeared, left Him, but said goodbye: “Brother Tsarevich, go and, when you find the hunter's hut, give him this piece of wood.” And he gave him a piece of wood with three signs.

Vladyka walked along the trail for seven days. On the eighth day I reached the hut. The door was open, and a tall old man, dressed in an old, dirty cloak, was cutting a tree.

Vladyka greeted according to the custom of India. But the hunter laughed and pointed to a tree. Vladyka remembered a piece of wood and handed it to him. The old man carefully examined the signs and good-naturedly pointed to the table in the hut. Vladyka understood the invitation and tasted game and honey. Then the old man signaled the Lord to rest.

When Lord Buddha woke up, the sun had just lit up the snow. The hunter was not in the hut, but the sound of his ax was heard from the yard. But then his figure appeared in the doorway and handed over Vladyka a drink of honey. Then the old man took the bag and spear and pointed to the sun. Vladyka realized that it was time to go, and taking a staff, he left the hut. The old man bowed to Him three times and instructed to follow.

Going to the bush, he parted the branches, and a narrow path was discovered. He made a sign to the Lord to follow him and quickly went forward, pointing to the sun. So they walked until noon, the forest began to thin, the sound of the river began to come, and they went ashore.

The old man pulled his bow and sent an arrow. They waited in silence. Vladyka took off his remaining jewelry and handed it to the old man. But he indicated to throw in the river.

Then a tall man appeared on the other side, put forward a boat and headed for them. His caftan was trimmed with fur, his face was very dark, wide. Having reached the coast, the stranger bowed to Vladyka and invited him to the shuttle.

Vladyka wanted to say goodbye to the hunter, but he quietly disappeared. The stranger also remained silent. Having reached the coast, they mounted their horses and began to climb the mountain.

At night they reached the limit of snows and at dawn descended to the Abode.

Bequeathed to Maitreya

The eyes of the Tsarevich child opened early on to the wonders of the world. Nothing escaped His soulful attention.

The king said: “Insight is the crown of the Lord, but the strength of his hand is his shield. Let him strengthen his hand on the bow string. Let the children of the noble Kshatriya compete with the Tsarevich. ”

Mother Queen added: “If insight is the crown of the Lord and the strength of his hand is his shield, then the radiance of the Lord is mercy and knowledge. I prefer to see my descendant surrounded by those who wrote the Vedas of the “Virgin of Wisdom”.

Then the old sage turned to the King, saying: “Mother is revered, and you, Lord, command me to unite your desires. Let me introduce you to the one we call the daughter of the Great Naga. Which we have taken into our house for seven years already, how amazed at her wisdom and the strength of her arrows. Truly she is worthy of the hand that traced the wisdom of the Vedas.

“Bring me,” the King pointed out.

A wise counselor brought a young creature and said: "Maitri, send the best greetings to our King."

It was never seen a seven-year-old girl in a white robe with a bow in his hand and a dagger in his belt. Dark hair did not listen well to Naga's hoop, and her eyes looked sad and stern.

The king ordered: "Maitri, if you can shoot an arrow, then pierce the peacock."

Maitri bowed to the King, saying: “I can not deprive an animal of life. But let the King pierce the apple on top of the apple tree. "

Tsar Maitri instructed him to be with Tsarevich and was much surprised at the wisdom found on the shore of the lake.

The Tsarevich and Maitri spent many years, calling her now formidable, now radiant, now a warrior, then a divine wisdom divine Nagas.

And the door of the Path opened Maitri.

When the powerful Leo returned and covered the mountains with a roar of Truth, Maitri kept Him the best student and said: “She will glorify the place of Your labors.”

The Lord of Truth said: “Maitri, the manifested Guide and Holder. You, having hidden your wisdom from the crowd, You will intercede My place as the Lord of Compassion and Labor. Maitreya will lead the nations to the Light, and the arrow of achievement will bring the apple of Knowledge. ”

The aforesaid is as true as the fact that a Temple of Knowledge will be erected at the place of worship of the Teacher.

The above is as true as the fact that the student of the Blessed One will give her name to the Temple of Knowledge.

The foundation of the manifestation of Truth is fixed by the labors of life.

Care

When the time approached, the Blessed One said to his wife: “Let's leave.”

And said three times - through the darkness of night, under the heat of noon and in the ray of sunrise.

But at night the tigers roared. In the heat snakes crawled out. And in the morning monkeys crowded.

“I’m still afraid,” said the wife, “now.”

“Also for the good,” said the Blessed One, “without a call you will carry the Doctrine with your gait.”

And the elephant blew seven times, announcing the date of a new date.

Covenants

"I bury, I praise you, Ananda, for without the call comes the affirmative." And the Blessed One saw on a scarf in Heaven the fate of the Light of the Mother of the World.

* * *

Here the Blessed One conveys: "Everything is for everything always." “Notice the Four Laws: the Law of Enclosure, the Law of Fearlessness, the Law of Intimacy, the Law of Good.”

Election for a Feat

How did Buddha choose disciples for a feat? Among the classes, when fatigue had already taken possession of the students, the Buddha offered the most unexpected question and waited for a speedy answer.

Or, having put the simplest subject, he suggested describing it in no more than three words or no less than a hundred pages.

Or, putting the student in front of the locked door, he asked: “How do you open it?”

Or he sent musicians out the window and made him sing hymns of completely opposite contents.

Or, noticing the annoying fly, he suggested that the student repeat the words that were unexpectedly spoken.

Or, walking in front of the students, he asked: how much has passed?

Or, having noticed a fear of animals or natural phenomena, he set a condition to overcome it.

So the powerful Leo tempered the blade of the spirit.

Favorite Buddha game with students

Also, do not forget the favorite game of the Buddha with the students in the moment of rest.

The teacher threw one word into space, on which the students built a whole thought.

There is no wiser test of the state of consciousness.

Foundation of teaching

People do not understand the basis of the Teaching of the Blessed One - the basis of discipline. Spiritually and bodily, the monk of the community sought to stay on the path. The first years he carried heavy obedience. He was forbidden to kill himself with exercises of the pillar, but was ordered to fight the battle with a single beginning of the spirit.

So severely taught Buddha disciples.

Truly, only in a spiritual battle did they know joy, therefore they speak of the thorns of the path.

Only when the ascetic’s will was born like a lion and the silver bridle of the spirit sparkled on the student’s feelings, only then did Vladyka open the curtain and give the task.

Then gradually the student was initiated into the Secrets of Knowledge.

Disclaimer of ownership

Once a student asked the Blessed One: “How to understand the fulfillment of the commandment to renounce property? One student left all things, but Teacher continued to reproach him for property. The other remained surrounded by things, but did not deserve a rebuke. ”

“A sense of ownership is measured not by things, but by thoughts. You can have things and not be the owner. ”

Buddha constantly advised to have as few things as possible so as not to give them too much time.

Conviction of the Savage

Buddha told the Brahmins: “What has your separation done? For bread, you go to the general bazaar and value coins from the sudra wallet. Your separation is simply called robbery. And your sacred things are simply instruments of deception. Is the property of a rich brahmin not a reproach of the Divine Law?

You consider the south to be light and the north to darkness. There will be a time when they come from midnight, and your light fades. Even birds fly north to bring chicks to the world. Even gray geese know the value of property on earth. But the brahmin is trying to fill his belt with gold and collect treasures under the hearth and under the threshold of the house.

Brahmin, you lead a miserable life, and your end will be miserable. You will be the first to be destroyed. ”

Three arhats

Three Arhats persistently asked the Buddha to let them experience the miracle. Buddha placed everyone in a dark room and locked them. After a long time, the Blessed One called them and asked about what they saw. Each told a different vision.

But the Buddha said: “Now you must agree that miracles are not useful, because you did not feel the main miracle. For you could feel being beyond sight, and this sensation could direct you beyond the earth.

But you continued to recognize yourself as sitting on the ground, and your thoughts drew waves of the elements to the earth. The swelling of elemental forms caused shocks in different countries. You destroyed the rocks and destroyed the ships in a hurricane.

You saw a red beast with a fiery crown, but the fire you extracted from the abyss burned the houses of the defenseless - go and help!

You saw a lizard with the appearance of a virgin, you made waves wash off fishing boats - hurry to help!

So you saw an eagle flying, and a hurricane brought down the harvest of the working people - go and reimburse!

Where is your benefit, Arhats? An owl in a hollow had a better time. Either you sweat your face on the earth, or in the moment of solitude elevate yourself above the earth. But let the senseless indignation of the elements be an occupation of the wise!

Truly a feather that has fallen from the wing of a small bird, it produces thunder on distant worlds. Inhaling the air, we join all the worlds.

The wise one goes from the earth to the top, for the worlds will reveal their wisdom to one another. ”

Shepherd and Saniyazin

The shepherd saw a man under a tree sitting in thought. He sat next to him and tried to think, imitating that man.

He began to count his rams and mentally weigh the benefits of their rune.

Both sat in silence. Finally, the shepherd asked: "Sir, what are you thinking about?" He said: "About God."

The shepherd asked: "Do you know what I was thinking?"

"Also about God."

"You are mistaken about the benefits of selling a rune."

“True is also about God. Only My God has nothing to sell, your God must first go to the market. But maybe on the way he will meet a robber who will help him turn to this tree. ” So said Gautama.

Go to the bazaar. Think sooner to return.

Monkey seller

A monkey seller was sailing on the ship. In his spare time, he taught them to imitate sailors when they sailed.

But the storm rose, the sailors rushed to clean up the gear. The monkeys, knowing only how to dissolve, followed along and pulled on gear.

The ship was lost, for the teacher foresaw only clear weather.

So said Buddha, the renewer of the Lotus of life.

The Parable of the Questioner

Dgulnor was considered the wisest. He was fortunate to receive a Master from the Holy Underground Country, but he was deprived of his tongue and his right hand.

The rushing student asked a question, and Master nodded his head.

The student asked two questions, and Master nodded twice.

Soon the student asked questions continuously, and Teacher nodded continuously. The questioning lasted three years, and Teacher nodded for three years.

“So, according to your experience, everything happens?” And Teacher not only nodded, but bowed to the ground, and opening his clothes on his chest, showed on his chest an image of the Blessed One giving with both hands.

Thus, wisdom was affirmed and the creativity of life was magnified.

Wheel of law

The Blessed One spoke the parable of the Wheel of the Law. A respectable man came to the skilful scribe and instructed to rewrite the appeal to God, for which he brought sufficient parchment.

Following him came a man with an order to rewrite a letter full of threats, and also gave parchment, in a hurry to finish soon.

To please him, the scribe broke the line and hastened with his order, and in haste he grabbed the skin of the first order.

The threatened man was very pleased and ran to pour out his anger.

Then the first customer came and, looking at the parchment, said: “Where is the skin that I gave?” Having learned everything that happened, he said: “The skin for prayers wore a blessing of fulfillment, while the skin for threats was devoid of influence.

The unfaithful person, having violated the law of terms, you stripped the prayer of the force that was supposed to help the patient, but not only that - you brought into action threats that are full of unheard of consequences.

The work of the Arhat who blessed my skin has disappeared. The work of the Arhat, who stripped the evil of power, disappeared.

You have released an evil curse into the world, and inevitably it will return to you. You have pushed the Wheel of the Law off the path, and it will not lead you, but it will cross your path. ”

Do not write laws on dead skin that the first thief will carry away.

Carry the Laws in the spirit, and the breath of the Good will carry the Wheel of the Law in front of you, making your journey easier.

The scribe's infidelity can drag the whole world into disaster.

Trait of necessity

Why did the distinction begin between Buddha and Devadata? Devadata asked: “Where to start each action?” The blessed one answered: “From the most necessary, because every moment has its own need, and this is called the justice of the action.”

Devadata insisted: “How does the evidence of necessity arise?” The blessed one answered: “The thread of necessity passes through all worlds. But those who do not understand it will remain in a dangerous gorge and not protected from stones. ”

So Devadata could not distinguish the line of necessity, and this darkness obscured the way to him.

Buddha seeker

One pure man wanted to see the Buddha, holding his attention to a wide variety of subjects. His hands lacked wise images, and his eyes did not pierce objects of veneration - the phenomenon did not come.

Finally, bowing in prayer, the seeker sensed a web of thread descending on his forehead. He threw it away and a clear voice came out: “Why are you banishing My hand? My Ray followed you, let me hug you. "

Then the man shook the serpent, and he found a discarded thread. And in his hands she turned into forty pearls, and each wore the Face of Buddha. In the middle was the Stone and the inscription on it: "Courage, despair, joy." The follower of Buddha received joy, for he knew the paths to it.

Cognized

To the great Knower came a disciple who wished miracles - "after a miracle I will believe."

Master smiled sadly and showed him a great miracle.

The student exclaimed: “Now I agree under Your arm to go through the steps of the Teaching!”

But Teacher showed him the door and said: "Now I no longer need you."

Salvation of man

The blessed one sat above the streams of a deep lake. In the depths one could see a whole world of fish and algae.

The blessed one noticed how this little world is similar to royal courts. If a man descends there, he will crush with his feet all the ghostly halls, but he will suffocate. From such depths the spirit of man does not rise.

“However, Teacher smiled, there is a remedy for everything. You can break through the rock and release the lake. "The snails will either have to dry out or find another existence, but man will no longer perish."

Parable of King Maragore

The Blessed One gave this parable to Narada. “Vladyka Jataka told his beloved adviser:“ Do you know the affairs of King Maragor? Have his name been heard? And did he recognize his actions? ”

“I give you an assignment, gather one hundred faithful people, and find resourcefulness to go around the land of Maragor, and just describe to me all his customs. If you meet the king himself, then tell him that I’m not afraid to pronounce his name. "

Ten years have passed. An adviser returns, wise in appearance, but full of embarrassment. Already not a hundred people, but a thousand accompany him.

“Vladyka, a lot of work has been laid by me, and a thousand witnesses are standing before you, but Your commission has not been fulfilled. Without an account, people were interviewed, and we lost track of the land covered. I will tell you, Lord, the most unusual: King Maragore does not exist, and there are no evil customs of him. "

“Welcome, Vladyka said, can you swear your words?” - “Before you are a thousand and one oaths.”

“Then take witnesses and go around all the squares and temples, announce and write on the pillars what you affirm.

My son, you have fulfilled My commission. You struck the beast of darkness with your labors. The ghost of horror has dissipated, and no one is afraid of what he knows.

Maragor is revealed by the horror of mankind and destroyed by the works of courage and devotion. Be My son, destroyer of darkness! ”

Instructions to the Ruler of Rajagriha

Once the Blessed One visited the Ruler of Rajagriha. The ruler drew attention to the purity of his receiving chamber. But the Blessed One said: “Show the best cleanliness of the bedchamber, wash basin and hearth. Acceptable peace has been defiled by many unworthy ones, but wherever your consciousness is going on, let it be pure. ”

And the Blessed One said: “It is necessary to distinguish between those who understand and those who agree. He who understands the Doctrine will not be slow to apply it to life. He who agrees will nod his head and extol the Doctrine as wonderful wisdom, but will not apply this wisdom in life.

There are many who agreed, but they, like a dry forest, are barren and without a shadow, only smoldering awaits them. There are few who understand, but they, like a sponge, absorb precious knowledge and are ready to wash the filth of the world with precious moisture.

He who understands cannot but apply the Teaching, for, understanding the expediency, he receives it as the outcome of life.

“Do not waste time on those who agree, let them first show the application of the first call.”

Thus they attribute to the Blessed One an expedient attitude towards those who come.

Burden

Two Buddhist monks returned to their monastery. When there was little more than three days of travel to the monastery, near a small but swift mountain river, they saw a young woman who could not cross the other side. According to the laws of their faith, touching a woman was considered a sinful act. But one of the monks approached the woman, put her on his shoulders and carried her across the river. After that, without saying a word, the monks continued on their way. When, after several days, the outline of the monastery appeared on the horizon, the second of the monks said:

“Will you tell the abbot that you carried this woman on you for almost five minutes?”

“I carried it for five minutes and left it on the other side, and you have been carrying it for the third day,” his companion answered.

Disputes

To stay overnight in a Zen temple, a wandering monk had to win a dispute about Buddhism among those living in the temple.

In one of the Zen temples in Japan, two brothers lived. The eldest was a scientist, and the younger was dull, and even one-eyed. Once at sunset, a wandering monk came to them and asked for shelter, calling them, as expected, to a dispute about the intricacies of the Teaching. Tired for the whole day of classes, the elder Brother sent to discuss the younger, saying: "Offer a dispute without words, silently."

And so the wanderer with the young monk retired to the discussion room ...

Soon an enthusiastic alien went to his elder brother to say goodbye: “Your younger brother is a wonderful and very smart person. He won the dispute. ” Surprised, but outwardly unperturbed, the elder brother asked: “Tell me, how did everything happen?”

“So,” the wanderer began, “at first I raised one finger, representing the Enlightened Buddha. In response, he raised two fingers, designating both Buddha and his Teaching. Then I raised three fingers, symbolizing the Buddha, and his Teaching, and his followers, who are in harmony. Then he shook his clenched fist in front of my face, showing that all this comes from the same consciousness. I realized that I lost. "

The traveler left, and the elder brother closed his eyes, resting.

“Where is this type?” Cried the younger brother, running up, “I won’t forgive him!”

"I realized that you won this debate, tell me how it all happened?"

“As soon as we sat against each other, he immediately raised one finger, impudently hinting that I have only one eye. Since he is an outsider, I decided to be polite with him and raised two fingers, congratulating him on the fact that he has both eyes. Then this shameless villain raised three fingers, showing that we have only three eyes for two. Then I could not stand it and wanted to hit him, but I resisted and only threatened him with my fist. To which he impudently bowed and went out. "

Meditation lesson

Hakuin had a student named Soshin. Soshin waited a long time, being next to the Master, when he began to teach him meditation. He was waiting for lessons like school ones, but they were not there, and this confused him and disappointed him.

Once he said to the Master:

- A lot of time has passed since I came here, but not a word was said to me about the meaning of meditation.

Hakuin smiled at this and told him:

“What are you saying, my boy?” Ever since you came, I always gave you meditation lessons!

These words confused the poor student even more. For some time he pondered them. Once, gaining courage, he again turned to the Master:

“What were these lessons, Teacher?”

Hakuin said:

- When in the morning you bring me a cup of tea, I accept it, when you serve me food, I accept it when you bow to me, I nod my head in response. How else do you want to learn meditation?

Soshin hung his head and began to think about the mysterious words of the Master, but at that moment the Master turned to him:

- If you want to see, look right now, because when you start to think, you completely lose the essence.

Golden rules of Buddha.

Wisdom in the commandments 379 and instructions.

- M.: Amrita-Rus, 2011. (trial version)

One of the greatest truths of Buddhism:

"Blessed are they who are not afflicted, but compassionate,"

described in this collection of articles.

Shakyamuni Buddha (tribal sage sakya)  - a real man who existed, a great teacher of the world, who, according to most scholars, lived in the 5th-5th centuries. BC. and preached dharma (often in Russian texts this meaning is given to this concept - universal law of being), which laid the foundation for Buddhist creed.

Here is a wonderful book that brings us closer to the very essence of the Buddha’s teachings - these are his statements, instructions, commandments, transmitted by students from century to century. Ancient scriptures emphasize the vitality of his teachings. It is important that the Buddha did not turn his back on life, but penetrated all the working days of the workers and suffered — immeasurably compassion.

In his instructions you will find true peace of mind for yourself, thanks to them transform your mind and achieve spiritual health.

O thou exalted life

O thou, supreme death,

I take refuge in Thee.

Let me light my extinct lamp from Your fire! Capturing Your glory on my forehead, Take away my shame forever.

Your feet are a transformed flame

That will turn my rust into gold.

Let all the darkness inside me burn in flames.

And take the cover of mistakes away.

Rabindranath Tagore

LORD BUDDHA.

According to legend, in the sixth century BC in North India, in the foothills of the Himalayas, there was a confluence of Kapilavastu; it was inhabited by numerous Shakya tribes, then we Ikshvaku, a solar kind of kshatriya. They were ruled by an older tribe, and the head of the tribe lived in the city of Kapilavastu, from which there are currently no traces, because even during the life of the Buddha he was destroyed by a neighboring hostile king. At that time, Suddhodana, the last direct descendant of Ikshvaku, reigned in Kapilavastu. The future great Teacher was born from this king and his wife Maya, who received the name of Siddhart, which means "fulfilled his purpose."

Visions in the prophecies preceded his birth. There are many legends about his wonderful conception. So, according to one legend, the Bodhisattva, having chosen Tsar Tsai Maya as her mother for her appearance on earth, adopted the image of a wonderful white elephant, entered her womb; on the other, it was a dream that Maya had. According to ancient legend, the vision of the word always means the embodiment of the divine Avatar. His very birth on the day of the May full moon was accompanied by numerous favorable signs in heaven and earth. So, the great Rishi Ltisha, who was in the Himalayas, in seclusion, having heard from the Devas about the birth of a Bodhisattva, the future Buddha who will launch the Kole-Doctrine in the Lumbini Grove (near Kapilavastu), immediately set off on the road to pay homage to the future Teacher of humanity. Arriving at the palace of Suddhodana, he expressed a desire to see the newborn Bodhisattva. The king ordered to bring the baby, expecting a blessing from the great Rishi. But Atisha, seeing the baby, at first smiled joyfully, then sobbed. The troubled king asked about the cause of his grief in whether he sees bad omens for his son. To this, Rishi answered that nothing threatens the baby. He rejoices, for the Bodhisattva will achieve complete illumination and become a great Buddha, but he also mournes, for he will not live to see his days and will not hear the Great Law, which will be announced to save the world.

Queen Maya, having given birth to Bodhisaggwe, died on the seventh day, and her sister, named Prajapati, took her place.

In the history of Buddhism, she is known as the first student of the Buddha and as the founder and first prioress of the female Buddhist community.

According to the custom of that time, on the fifth day after the birth of the Bodhisattva, one hundred and eight Brahmins, the most versed in the Vedas and predictions, were called to the Suddhodana palace to give the name of the newborn prince and read, and to determine his life path in the plan of light.

The book considers Buddhism as an effective philosophy of life that answers global issues of human existence, on the one hand, and gives specific recommendations on the other.

A person who studies any spiritual tradition is confronted with questions: what is spiritual practice? What is its purpose? What determines its effectiveness? This publication is an attempt to convey the essence of Buddhist teachings and methods of transformation of consciousness, using only concepts and images familiar to modern man.

Introduction

Throughout its existence, Buddhism has generated countless texts, perhaps the most extensive of all areas of human thought. There are good and very good books in this ocean of books, and in recent centuries a lot of near-Buddhist and pseudo-Buddhist books have appeared ... If you are holding two books from this field, then it is highly likely that they only have in common that they are “about Buddhism”. In this sea of \u200b\u200bliterature, it is easy to lose a guideline and never find answers to your burning questions.

We grow up and grow ... Some lucky people grow up and grow up to a very old age ... And with them problems that bother them also grow. These people are worried about the prospects, not just “in five years”, but, for example, “in old age”, and even “after death”. Buddha offers his own way to solve problems, some of his advice will be immediately useful, others in the long run.

What are good ancient schools? - Credibility! They are verified! Empirically! For thousands of years. You can be sure that we have already taken this path and will be warned in advance of all possible dangers. Our predecessors suffered from mistakes, achieved results and carefully provided us with reliable information on how to avoid the first and come to the second.

Why are ancient schools bad? - A load of rituals and cultural features that have lost their meaning.

Not taking the liberty to separate the cultural-ritual grains from the chaff, the author concentrated on explaining to the reader the essence of Buddhist methods of transformation of consciousness, and considered only those questions that seem understandable from the point of view of today.

Countless generations of practitioners and healthy skepticism of modern man are guaranteed in this situation. The limited volume of the book does not allow a thorough understanding of how and why these methods work, and therefore the main directions are only dashed here, so that those of us who decide to go further feel more confident when traveling through the expanses of Buddhist literature.

In this book, Buddhism is considered as a practical philosophy that answers the global questions of human existence, on the one hand, and gives specific recommendations on the other.

The book is completely devoid of "mysticism", "esotericism", ritualism and any other raid that allows you to make unfounded allegations.

The order of mastering the Doctrine

Engaging in meditation without study is like an armless man climbing a rock.

Patrol rinpoche

In this chapter we will have to debunk the established stereotype of the methods of Buddhist practice.

This stereotype is this: practice consists of “meditation”, and meditation is a special pleasant and sublime state of consciousness that needs to be long and hard to learn.

One more thing is connected with this error - that there are two independent paths: intelligence and experience. According to the second, it is assumed that the teacher without explanation leads you to a high state of mind, and this is a faster way than intellectual ...

Buddhist texts clearly state that learning consists of three stages:

Hearing: obtaining reliable information (including reading books);

Reflection: analysis and verification of this information;

Contemplation of what is accepted as reliable.

As you can see, contemplation (which is most often understood by "meditation") refers to the last stage.

The need to read and analyze philosophical theories sometimes frightens away, especially people enthusiastic in nature. Most people interested in Buddhism have some expectations and anticipations of how they will “meditate”. Reality is more prosaic and interesting at the same time. Dharma is a science of consciousness, and, as in any science, training is required here first, then analysis, and only then practical implementation!

Buddha said that we should be skeptical of the Dharma - trust only what our trained skepticism crashed about. First, we approach the Dharma as another exotic, but potentially useful theory. We study a foreign language, the history of music, traffic rules and ... What else is there? Oh yes - Buddhism! The list can be individually adjusted, but in our perception it looks something like this. As you become acquainted, the Dharma takes a special place and then leaves any list at all! She is from another category - this is not another discipline, but an alternative worldview. This does not happen in one year, and only thanks to analysis, when we are convinced that this is not just “another one’s opinion”, but the worldview is more reliable and adaptive than ours.

“Analysis” is a dry word, it has an association with something boring and binding, “reflection” is better suited.

Thinking about what is heard happens gradually, sometimes spontaneously, of course. Discoveries happen on this path, sometimes it takes our breath away from the fact that we have learned something radically new and understand how many problems this will remove from our busy life. Then we compare our past views with new ones and do not want to roll back. A simple example: let's say we have a sharp tongue, and it’s easy for us to shut our mouths or put our vis-a-vis into place. In this habit, we see nothing shameful - on the contrary, it increases self-esteem. Having studied the theory of karma and making sure that we are paying the price for an evil language with very specific consequences, we will want to be rude to others without the slightest coercion. This will not be the rule of struggle with oneself, but the desire not to tell people disgust.

Dharma is unobtrusive, all that is required of us is skeptical interest. She will do the rest herself, simply by virtue of authenticity and attractiveness, by virtue of the fact that “it works”! If we, while walking, reflect on our behavior or in our free time we read a book on the Dharma, then this becomes a practice, natural and harmonious.

On a note. The original meaning of the word meditatio (lat .: reflection), very accurately conveys the essence of Buddhist practice. When people who are looking for “high meditative states” in Buddhism say: “The main thing is meditation,” they formally turn out to be absolutely right, although they mean something else.

For the sake of a clear understanding of the methods, we need to determine the terms dumped into one hole under the label "meditation", and at the same time to understand where the meaning was twisted

We have already talked about the benefits of thinking - this is the main method that provides the lion's share of the results. Meditation precedes contemplation, and it is difficult to distinguish between deep meditation and actual contemplation.

So, by meditation they can mean: unidirectional concentration (concentration), deep analytical contemplation, direct perception of reality.

Unidirectional concentration is a complex technique that requires solid preparation. Complete mastery of this skill involves going through ten stages of concentration; however, simple steps are useful even for beginners. Already the first stages are accompanied by pleasant sensations that have no analogues in our ordinary life. Obviously, this is an explanation of why the term “meditation” has undergone the aforementioned twisting. Having experienced this for the first time, a person becomes attached and seeks to reproduce pleasant sensations. He begins to think that this is "meditation." Teachers call these conditions “flowers on the sidelines” and “traps” - instead of moving on, we turn onto the sidelines. From the sansaric point of view, staying in such conditions is useful due to the psychotherapeutic effect, however, this is not connected with the spiritual path, on the contrary it is a serious obstacle.

Analytical contemplation is like thinking, but is accessible to a person who has developed some ability to concentrate. At this stage, concentration and thinking are combined - the mind considers logical chains without distractions and with utmost clarity, it is able to see the whole picture; we can say that "logic becomes figurative." The conclusions are obvious and are not “theory”, but “knowledge” and do not give rise to doubt.

And finally, direct perception - if someone gets to the previous stage, then he will almost certainly get here, and one can only hope that he will share his knowledge with us.

Total.  Studying and thinking is the basis of Dharma practice.

Pages of the secret history of Lord Buddha

The book offered to the reader contains classic parables attributed to various Buddhist Masters. But these parables, reflecting the golden rules of Buddhist teachings, have long overcome the boundaries of Buddhism, within the framework of which they were created, and are today the property of world culture, spiritually enriching any person who touched their wisdom. After all, touching wisdom through a parable, a legend, a fairy tale is the most democratic way of knowing the Truth.
