Foreword

This book has become a real gift for us. While working on it, all the time we felt the love, happiness and indomitable strength of mind of those women that are described here. We hope that for you the book will become a source of joy and discovery.

Each of us spoke a lot to an audience, most often a female one, talking about how to make life more complete and happy. We have always been fascinated and inspired by the openness with which women shared their experiences, stories and experiences. From this inspiration the book “Chicken Broth for the Soul. 101 stories about women. "

Every day of its creation, a miracle happened in our life! Like an invisible hand led us along this path.

For example, we searched Phyllis Volkens, author of The Kiss for the Night, for a year, to ask her for permission to publish. The Phillies husband, Stanley, was incredibly happy when we finally found them. For several years, both of them have been fans of Chicken Broth, but alas, the Phillies had no more than a week to live. It was her happiness to know that her story would go down in the book. Two days later she died.

The sincerity, wisdom of these women, their ability to sympathize is truly a great gift to the whole world. We sincerely wish that these stories help you day after day to learn to value yourself and each other, as they helped us.

One of the women who wrote to us, Mary Maychalika, said: “Every woman experiences a period when too many problems fall upon her - family, work, spouse, ex-husband, relatives and adoptive children, parents. At this time, it is very important - it is simply necessary - to take a step back and reevaluate priorities, reflect on your mission in this life. After all, only one who knows how to take care of the needs of his soul is capable of truly caring for loved ones. ”

So, from the bottom of our hearts we offer you “Chicken broth for the soul. 101 stories about women. " Let these stories touch your soul and awaken the wonders of love and inspiration in it.

Chapter 1
About love

The best and the most beautiful in life cannot be seen or touched - you can only feel it with your heart.

Helen Keller

writer, lecturer and political activist, deprived of sight and hearing since childhood

White gardenia

Since I was 12 years old, every year someone has sent me a white gardenia for my birthday. No note or postcard; Calling a flower shop was useless: the purchase was always paid in cash. Soon I gave up trying to find out the identity of the donor and simply enjoyed the beauty and heady aroma of this magical snow-white flower wrapped in soft pink paper.

This did not stop me from fantasizing about who sent it. It seemed to me someone beautiful, romantic and too modest to reveal his name. As a teenager, I dreamed that this was a boy with whom I was in love, or maybe even a stranger, struck by my beauty.

Mother only provoked my fantasies. She asked: maybe I helped someone and he decided to anonymously thank me? For example, when I was riding a bicycle, and a neighbor with a crowd of children and a bunch of groceries was passing by, I always helped her to unload the car and made sure that the children did not run out onto the road. Or maybe the mysterious admirer is an old man who lived on the other side of the street? In winter, I often checked his mailbox so that he would not have to go down the icy steps. Mom wanted to develop creative thinking in her children, and also - so that we feel that they love us, that we are not indifferent not only to her, but to the whole world.

When I was seventeen, one boy broke my heart. That evening, when he left me, I cried until I fell asleep. In the morning I found on the mirror a message written in red lipstick: “With my heart I know: when the demigods leave, the gods come.” I thought about this quote from Emerson for a long time. 1
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882) - one of the most prominent writers and thinkers of the United States ( Note ed.).

And left her where my mother wrote her, until my heart calmed down. When I finally decided to erase it, my mother realized that everything was fine with me. And yet there were wounds that she could not heal.

A month before graduation, my father suddenly died of a heart attack. I experienced the whole gamut of sorrowful feelings: from the feeling that they left me, and fear - to the loss of faith and desperate anger that my father would not be around at important moments of my life. I lost interest in studying and graduation - and just recently I was waiting for him so! I even started thinking about going to study at a local college, instead of leaving as I had planned.

Mom also grieved, but did not even allow the thought that I would miss the prom. The day before our father’s death, we went to get a dress and found something absolutely unbelievable - a few yards of muslin fabric with woven peas - red, white and blue. I felt like Scarlett O’Hara in him 2
Scarlett O’Hara - the heroine of Margaret Mitchell’s novel “Gone with the Wind” ( Note red.).

That's just the size did not fit me.

The next day, my father died, and I was not at all up to the dress. But mother did not leave this venture. The day before graduation, I found that the dress was waiting for me - and this time the size was mine. Mom lovingly laid it out so that it seemed to be sitting on a sofa in the living room.

I didn’t care if I would have a new dress, but my mother didn’t. For her, our childhood impressions were extremely important. She taught us to see the magic of the world and its beauty even through adversity. In fact, mother wanted her children to feel like that gardenia - beautiful, strong, perfect, shrouded in a mysterious aura.

Mom died when I was 22, 10 days after my wedding. Since then, no more gardenias have been sent to me.

Words from the heart

The most bitter tears above the graves are shed by unspeakable words and unfinished deeds.

Harriet Beecher Stowe

writer

Many people need to hear these "three little words." And sometimes they sound very on time.

We met Connie when she entered the hospice, where I was a volunteer. She was transferred from a gurney to a bed, and her husband Bill stood nearby, shifting from foot to foot. And although Connie had the last stage of cancer, she stayed cheerful and cheerful.

I labeled her hospital supplies and asked if she needed anything.

“Oh yes,” she answered. - Please show how to turn on the TV. I love TV shows and don’t want to miss anything.

Connie was a very romantic woman. She loved soap operas, romance novels and love movies. She later admitted how difficult it is for her to live with a man who now and then calls her a "fool."

“Of course I know that Bill loves me,” she assured. - But he never told me about it, he didn’t even send a postcard.

She sighed and looked out the window, at the trees in the yard.

- I would give everything to at least once hear from him "I love you", but this is not in his character.

Bill visited Connie every day. At first he just sat by her bed while she watched her TV shows. Then, as she slept more and more, he paced the corridor next to the room. Soon, Connie could no longer watch TV and rarely came to her senses. Then I began to talk more with Bill. He talked about his work as a carpenter and how he loves fishing. They had no children with Connie, but they liked traveling alone until Connie got sick. Bill could not express in words how he feels, thinking about the approaching death of his wife.

Once in a cafe, I started a conversation with him about women and how important romance is for us, how we love sentimental postcards and love letters.

“You tell Connie that you love her?” I asked, already knowing the answer, and he looked at me as if she were crazy.

“This is not necessary,” he answered. “She already knows that!”

“I'm sure I know,” I touched his rude carpenter's hand, clutching the cup as if it were a saving straw. - But she needs it. hearBill. Hear what she has meant to you all these years. Think about it.

We went back to Connie's room. Bill hid inside, and I went to another patient. Later I saw Bill - he was sitting near his sleeping wife and squeezed her hand.

It was February 12th. Two days later, in the evening, I saw Bill in the hallway, leaning against the wall and staring at one point. I already knew from the head nurse that Connie passed away at 11 in the morning. Bill let himself hug. His face was wet with tears, he was trembling all over.

“I need to tell you something,” he said. “I was so relieved to tell her about my feelings ... I thought a lot about your words, and this morning said how much I loved her ... and how happy I was in marriage with her. You should have seen her smile!

I went into the room to say goodbye to Connie. On the bedside table lay a large postcard from Bill. You know, of those sentimental ones - "To my wonderful wife ... I love you."

Just in time

One late evening, in a strong storm, an old black woman stood on the side of the Alabama highway, wet to the skin. Her car broke down, and by all means she needed to catch a ride.

Finally, a young white man stopped near her - an unheard-of rarity in the far South in the turbulent sixties. He took her to warmth and then put her in a taxi. It was evident that she was in a hurry. The woman wrote down his address, thanked and left.

A week later, the men knocked on the door. To his surprise, he discovered on the threshold of a color TV and stereo recorder. A note was glued to the box:

“Dear Mr. James!

Thank you so much for helping me on the road that night. I got so wet - it seems that even my thoughts were saturated with rain. And then you came. Thanks to you, I managed to say goodbye to my dying husband. God bless you for selfless help to me and other people.

Sincerely Yours, Mrs. King King Number »

Gifts from the heart

Only that love that we give remains with us.

Albert Hubbard,

businessman and writer

In our hectic world, it’s much easier to transfer money to someone’s account than to make a gift from the bottom of my heart.  But sincere gifts are especially important on a holiday.

A few years ago, I began to prepare children for the thought that this year we will celebrate Christmas modestly.

- Come on, Mom, we already heard that! They answered. They didn’t believe me: last year I said the same thing - simultaneously doing the divorce proceedings - and then she spat and sent all the money for treats and gifts.

This year everything will be different, I thought. You will see.

But how to make this Christmas special? Before the divorce, I always managed to decorate the house for the holiday, wherever we live. I learned to glue wallpapers, lay wood panels and ceramic tiles, sew curtains from sheets and much more. But now we lived in a rented house, and there was little time to decorate it, but even less money. In addition, this ugly interior infuriated me: red-orange carpets and blue-blue walls. Spending on his accomplishment did not want to. The inner voice of my wounded pride shouted: "We are here for a short time!"

My daughter Lisa always tried to turn her room into a special place. I called my ex-husband and asked me to buy a beautiful bedspread for Lisa, and I myself picked up the linen to match.

Christmas Eve Spent $ 15 Per Gallon 3
  4.5 liters ( Note per.).

Paints and bought the most beautiful stationery that I have ever seen in my life. My goal was simple: to paint and sew until Christmas - then there will be no time to pity myself on this magical family holiday.

In the evening, I distributed three pencils and envelopes to the children. At the top of each envelope was written: “For which I love my sister Mia most of all”, “For which I love my brother Chris most of all”, “For which I love my sister Lisa most of all” and “For which I love my sister most of all Eric's brother. "

The children were then 16, 14, 10 and 8 years old. I had to try to convince them to find something good in each other. While they were writing, I went into my room and packed their presents. When they finished their letters, we kissed each other for the night and they scattered about in bed. As an exception, I allowed Lisa to sleep with me, taking her word from her that she would not peep.

I myself started to work. By dawn, I finished the curtains, painted the walls, and stepped back a few steps to admire my creation. Stop! Or maybe stick a rainbow and clouds, like on sheets? I finished by five in the morning. I no longer have the strength to think that we are a “dysfunctional family,” as they say in dry statistical reports.

Returning to myself, I found Lisa scattering on the bed. Realizing that I couldn’t sleep like that, I carefully lifted her and carried her to her room. When I put her to bed, she asked:

- Mom, is it morning already?

- No, dear, close your eyes and do not open until Santa arrives.

In the morning I woke up in a whisper:

- Wow, mom, how beautiful!

Then we all sat around the Christmas tree and began to unwrap our modest gifts. The children were given envelopes. We read messages with tears in our eyes. The last came the turn of the youngest. Eight-year-old Eric did not expect to hear anything pleasant. His brother wrote: "I love my brother Eric because he is not afraid of anything." Miya: “I love my brother Eric because he finds a common language with everyone!” Lisa: “I love my brother Eric because he climbs the trees above all!”

Someone jerked my sleeve lightly. With his little hand over my ear, Eric whispered:

“Well, mother, I didn’t know that they love me!”

So our resourcefulness and ingenuity helped us overcome the vicissitudes of fate.

Since then I got to my feet, and we celebrated more than one magnificent Christmas with many gifts under the Christmas tree ... But if you ask which Christmas we have the most, we will answer together: the same.

Cheryl Nicholson

Another woman

Having lived 21 years in marriage, I discovered a new way for me to kindle a spark of love and passion in our relationship with my wife. I began dating another woman.

In fact, the idea belonged to my wife.

“You know you love her,” she said, taking me by surprise. - Life is short. And you need to live it with those you love.

- But I love you- I objected.

“I know.” But you love her too. It seems to me that if you were more likely to be together, you and I would become closer.

Peggy is always right.

Another woman my wife insisted on meeting with was my mother.

Mom is 71 years old. My father died nineteen years ago, and since then she lives alone. Immediately after his death, I moved fifteen hundred kilometers from California, where I got a family and made a career.

Five years ago, I returned to my hometown and promised myself that I would spend more time with my mother. But in the bustle, spinning between work and three children, I break out only on family holidays.

When I called and offered to go to dinner, and then to the cinema, she did not believe me and was wary:

- What's wrong? Are you going to tear me apart from my grandchildren?

My mother is one of those women who are able to suspect a catch in the most ordinary things - such as a late call from the eldest son with an invitation to dinner.

“I just thought it would be great to be together,” I replied. “Only you and I.”

She thought and said:

- It would be nice. I like this idea.

When I drove up to her house on Friday after work, I felt some nervous excitement - like before a date. But I was just about to have dinner with my mother! But what are we going to talk about? And if she doesn't like the restaurant I chose? Or a movie? What if she doesn't like anything at all?

Turning to her house, I realized that my mother was extremely excited about the upcoming date. She was already waiting at the door, dressed. Her hair was curled, a smile on her lips.

“I told my friends that I was going to dinner with my son, it shocked them so much,” she said, getting into the car. “They can't wait for tomorrow when I tell them how the evening went.”

It was the most ordinary cafe where we could sit and talk. When we arrived, my mother squeezed my hand tightly - from surging emotions and to overcome the steps.

Having settled down at the table, I began to read the menu aloud: she with her vision could distinguish only large objects and shadows. Reaching the middle, I raised my eyes.

Mom sat opposite and looked at me with a sad smile.

“When you were little, I read the menu,” she said.

I immediately understood what he meant. The circle of our relations is closed: first, my mother cared for me, now - I am about her.

“So it's time for you to relax and let me thank you,” I replied.

We had a nice conversation at dinner. Nothing special - just telling each other about your life. We got so loose that we missed the film.

“I will go on a date with you again, but only the next time I cry,” my mother said when I drove her home. I agreed.

“Well, how was the date?” - asked the wife when I returned home.

“Nothing ... better than I expected,” I replied.

She smiled, and this smile read clearly: "I told you so."

In the morning I found on the mirror a message written in red lipstick: “With my heart I know: when the demigods leave, the gods come.” I thought about this quote from Emerson for a long time and left it where my mother wrote it, until my heart calmed down.
