The sphere of gas and oil production in Russia is especially popular. It is not surprising that a large number of people are willing to work in precisely this. What is the oil and gas business? What kind of profession can be carried out here? Answers to these and many other questions can be found in the article.

general characteristics

For a long time no one denies the fact that the most profitable and relevant sphere in the Russian Federation is the oil and gas business. What kind of profession stands out here? Despite the wide variety of the most diverse specialties, qualifications and categories, almost any employee who carries out his activities in the oil and gas industry is called an oil technologist.

I must say that this profession is incredibly popular among applicants. Attracts high and high-quality career prospects. Do not forget about the constant scientific developments that allow you to regularly improve your professional level.

What kind of profession?

Oil and gas business: what is this area? The specialty of a petroleum technologist has many subspecies and ranks. Accordingly, work responsibilities in different places may be different. But in most cases, this is usually the installation, repair or adjustment, maintenance of oil or gas wells, etc.

It is immediately worth noting that the oilman’s labor activity is not connected with a comfortable office and a lot of documentation. Not only is it carried out in remote places of the country, but also all work is carried out in not the best conditions. But there are exceptions. As already mentioned, the direction "oil and gas business" is considered a very wide area. What kind of profession for a girl or representatives of bureaucratic production can be highlighted here? Despite the remaining note in the work book about the specialty of the technologist, some work can also be carried out "ashore." So, specialists can work in the field of organization of brigades, control over labor protection, etc. There are a lot of types of professional activity, and therefore everyone can find the most suitable job for themselves.

Professional Features

What is the oil and gas business? What kind of profession and its description - all this information will be best compiled by considering the basic functions of workers involved in the gas and oil industry.

If we talk about the most general competencies inherent in almost all oil and gas specialists, then the following points are worth highlighting:

  • ensuring effective and reliable operation of all available equipment;
  • control over automated and technological processes;
  • carrying out the necessary calculations and drawing up technological plans;
  • implementation of work on drilling, preparation, production, transportation and storage of products;
  • carrying out diagnostic and maintenance work;
  • repair of equipment;
  • research work.

Thus, the professional field in question is incredibly voluminous and wide. Each employee is required to carry out a fairly large number of labor functions. Timely improvement of qualification level will only increase the load.

Training

It is possible to master only in a higher educational institution. So, to obtain a specialty, it is necessary to complete 11 classes of school education, and then pass the Unified State Exam. Most universities accept applicants who have passed such disciplines as specialized mathematics, the Russian language, as well as computer science and physics. In order to have excellent chances to enter a university in the specialty "oil and gas business", you must pass exams for 80-86 points.

Future technologists are able to prepare many universities in Moscow. But there are also some regional institutions where there is an opportunity to get the desired specialty. Here is just a small list of educational institutions:

  • MGMU (Moscow Engineering);
  • RGGRU named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze (MGRI);
  • Far Eastern University of Railway Transport;
  • Moscow Transport Institute - "oil and gas business".

Professions are very popular today. Therefore, it is very difficult to enter some universities. It is necessary to work and study a lot - only in this way will the opportunity to master the profession qualitatively appear.

Disciplines

As a rule, the term of study at the university in the specialty in question is 4 years. So, only four courses of study will help a citizen get a bachelor's degree. However, it can also be obtained within five years; we are talking about students studying in part-time, evening or mixed form of training.

What disciplines are included in the training course? Almost any university that provides the opportunity to receive education in the oil and gas industry has a curriculum with the following disciplines:

  • hydraulics and oil and gas hydromechanics;
  • fundamentals of qualimetry, standardization and metrology;
  • automation;
  • chemistry of oil and gas;
  • fundamentals of thermodynamics and heat transfer;
  • computer graphics;
  • and some other training programs.

Essential Skills

The training process should form a number of skills and abilities useful for the work of the future oil industry technologist. What exactly is it about? In short, young people should possess a number of essential abilities, without which the implementation of labor activity in this area would be simply impossible.

Professional technologists must design high-quality various kinds of schemes and plans. Any specialist involved in the oil and gas industry is required to take part in the development of various projects using modern computer technology. That is why it is worth highlighting the most important and useful skill for any technologist: the ability to correctly use software and computer technology. Without this, such an important area as the oil and gas business could not have developed.

What kind of profession is it without a number of such important skills as industriousness, the ability to work in a team, patience, etc.? All these properties and character traits must be possessed by any oil industry technologist.

Professional perspectives

What are the prospects for workers in the oil and gas business? What kind of profession can stand out here, and what features of career growth can be here? As a rule, all graduates of oil and gas universities go to work in their field. Any relevant company is ready to hire people who have graduated from an educational institution. Nevertheless, competition for vacant positions remains quite high.

Young people can expect to get a job as a master, laboratory assistant, engineer or technician. Do not forget about the research direction, for which, however, it is necessary to complete a master's program.

The career ladder is open to every hardworking and hardworking employee. A representative of any specialty is able to promptly raise the level of his professional qualifications.

Salaries

Many citizens are interested in the income of workers involved in the oil and gas business. What kind of profession? The salary here varies greatly, and how big is it? All these questions are asked by applicants before entering a university. The answer is right away: the minimum income of workers involved in the professional field under consideration is 40-50 thousand rubles. Timely advanced training and obtaining new categories will help to "raise" this figure to 70-100 thousand rubles.

A process engineer can receive about 60-80 thousand rubles, and a chief engineer - about 100 thousand rubles.

Master

What do those who choose the specialty "oil and gas business" study at the magistracy? What kind of profession can be obtained here?

The entire process of training in the magistracy is a quality research activity. And what prospects can graduate graduates expect? As a rule, this is work in oilfield services companies, as well as scientific laboratories - public or private.

Today, almost every Russian university with an oil and gas specialty provides graduate studies. Undergraduates are able to qualitatively master such scientific disciplines as geology, chemistry, geophysics, geodesy, etc.

At St. Petersburg State University, unique educational programs are being developed that reflect the country's economic development strategy. For example, in February, the university opens a cycle of public lectures for high school students and applicants, "The Many Faces of Geology." Everyone will be able to learn more about the wealth hidden in the bowels of our country, get acquainted with the work of geologists who seek and develop these wealth.

Professor Sergey Vitalievich Aplonov, Head of the Department of Geophysics of the Geological Faculty of St. Petersburg State University, Advisor to the Vice-Rector of St. Petersburg State University in the areas of "Geology" and "Management" will tell more about the Oil and Gas Business program.

New direction

Special federal law assigned two “main” classical universities of the country, St. Petersburg State University and Moscow State University, a special status. Among other things, it gives us the right to independently develop educational standards and programs, create unique curricula and open new directions.

This year, the Faculty of Geology of St. Petersburg State University will accept applicants in three major areas: two traditional for us - "Geology" and "Ecology and Environmental Management", and one new - "Oil and Gas Business".

For St. Petersburg State University, this is a new thing. To date, oil and gas specialties have existed mainly in universities of a "technical" orientation: Moscow State University of Oil and Gas named after Gubkina, our St. Petersburg Mining Institute, where a whole oil and gas faculty is open.

The main emphasis there was on exploration, production, and their technical aspects. Of course, this is a necessary part of the oil business, because for a petroleum geologist a well is a success criterion. It’s not for nothing that the oilmen say: “Oil is at the tip of a chisel.”

But in general, the oil and gas business consists of many, and by no means only technical aspects. Everyone knows that oil and gas are an essential part of both the budget and the GDP (gross domestic product) of our country. It is likely to remain so in the near future, since Russia is a commodity country. And there’s nothing wrong with that, you don’t need to be ashamed and complex.

Recently, we have been strongly persuaded that almost a “raw curse” hangs over our country, that we need to choose: either oil and gas, or modernization of the economy. But few people know that the oil and gas business is one of the most science-intensive sectors of the economy. After all, it is only a poorly educated amateur who believes that it is worth making a “hole” in the ground, and oil will flow out of it or gas will flow. Each oil and gas field is a high-tech enterprise. In the search, exploration and production of hydrocarbons, the latest achievements of technology and human thought are used. There is no alternative between the commodity and innovation economies; on the contrary, the commodity economy should be as innovative as possible. Moreover, the oil and gas sector contributes to the development of a number of related areas, and this is hundreds of thousands of jobs.

Another thing, how effective is the Russian oil and gas sector today? And how do we manage our oil and gas wealth? This is a topic for another discussion, and it is precisely these problems that we place at the forefront of our educational program “Oil and Gas Business”.

The task is the reproduction of the mineral resource base

       From oil lying in the bowels of the Earth, to gasoline in a car tank - a long way. Therefore, in the oil and gas business, as in any other, there are several stages:
  1. Searches: it is necessary to find exactly where and at what depth oil and gas lie.
  2. Reconnaissance: when we found oil, we need to determine how much it is contained in a given section of the earth’s bowels.
  3. Production: oil and gas must be extracted from the bowels, preferably with minimal losses.

The first, search stage is the most responsible and at the same time the most high-tech. The success of the entire oil and gas industry, and the well-being of the economy of our country as a whole, depend on how effective it is. If you are engaged, even very successfully, only in the development of fields, only in the extraction of oil and gas, then sooner or later they will end. And then the question will be: where to get new hydrocarbons?

Therefore, the main task of geologists and the ultimate goal of geological exploration for oil and gas is the reproduction of the country's mineral resource base. For a unit of time, it is necessary to find and explore at least as much (better - more) oil and gas, how much they are extracted from the bowels of the earth during this time. If this is not done, then after a very short period (5-10 years) the country remains without energy resources at all, and for any country this is a disaster.

At the same time, the consumption of hydrocarbons around the world is growing. Whatever we are told about alternative energy sources, energy-saving technologies (which, of course, is very important in itself!), This trend seems to continue for the foreseeable future. So, oil and gas companies need to steadily and systematically increase their oil and gas reserves. For example, in the near future, our largest gas company Gazprom plans to reach a production level of 600 billion cubic meters of gas per year. A very ambitious and understandable goal: energy consumption in the world is growing, everyone needs gas. But this means that by the time Gazprom reaches such a level of gas production, it will have to increase every year, that is, find at least 600 billion cubic meters of gas in the bowels, or better, 700-800.

This is where the problems begin, which will have to be solved by those who are just about to receive education under the Oil and Gas Business program.

Two ways to build reserves

Unfortunately, hydrocarbon resources, like other minerals, are not renewable. Bowels tend to be depleted. There are simply no large and simple onshore oil and gas deposits on land. Of course, there are successful projects today, for example, the shelf of Sakhalin Island, where a number of fairly large deposits have been discovered in recent years. But compared to deposits in Western Siberia (which were discovered in the 1970s and still remain the basis of our energy well-being) - these are tears. Oil and gas workers need to understand that the time of the "simple giants" is over. So, there are two ways to build up the resource base.

The first way is to search and develop relatively small deposits of oil and gas in traditional oil and gas producing regions: in Western Siberia, in the Komi Republic, in Tatarstan and Bashkiria. Processing enterprises work there, there are roads, transport and logistics systems. But the deposits are becoming smaller, they are getting deeper, it is becoming more and more difficult to search for them. So, it is necessary to improve production at existing fields, and at the same time look around for small deposits, pull them up to developed infrastructure.

I must say that on this path over the past 20 years, our fuel and energy complex has already achieved tremendous success. Many fields are developed very efficiently, companies have learned to work at the highest international standards.

But for our country, of course, this is not enough. We need a second way: we must go to poorly studied territories, where we can still meet large deposits of oil and gas. However, such a territory was left alone - this is our Arctic shelf. Its hydrocarbon resources are rated very highly, but everyone understands that these resources are very expensive. It’s extremely difficult to work in the Arctic, and the cost of error is very high. To understand this, it is enough to know: the cost of just one (!) Exploratory well, even on the shelf of the Sea of \u200b\u200bOkhotsk (not the Arctic), reaches 150-200 million dollars, and dozens are needed to search and explore only one field of such wells.

The efficiency of geological exploration with which we are currently looking for deposits on land is completely insufficient for work on the Arctic shelf. And the point here is not only and not so much in technology, but in ideology: for effective work on the shelf, a much higher level of analysis of geological information is required than the one that is currently used. And we again return to where we started - to geological formation, without which there is nothing to do on the shelf. You can repeat the spells that the shelf is our future as much as you like, but if you come to the shelf unprepared, then we will soon lose this future.

SPbU will close the “gap” in geology

No matter what they say about the remarkable Soviet geological formation, today there are almost no specialists left in the country who can professionally search for oil and gas. The reason is that today's geologists of oil and gas enterprises, as a rule, graduated from universities 20-30 years ago, and during this time, geology as a science has changed dramatically. And also in the fact that over the past 20 years, neither the state nor private companies have worked for the long term (resource assessment, preparation of hydrocarbon reserves). We will try to close this gap with our Oil and Gas Business program.

This program will have a powerful geological block, as in the search it is important to have a lot of general geological fundamental knowledge. Time has shown that a true professional oilman must combine the talents of a scientist and a manager; therefore, the managerial, economic and legal blocks will be strengthened in the university's Oil and Gas Business program.

Now we are actively working to ensure that the large oil and gas business participates in the training of our professionals, and we are negotiating with companies on this topic.

Another distinguishing feature is the inclusion of education. This is a common practice, but it is not often found in geology. Students' field trips will be held, including abroad. There is much to learn there, especially in organizational and technical terms, and a full-fledged language training will not be superfluous (the qualifications of a Soviet engineer “read and translate with a dictionary” are completely insufficient for a modern specialist).

In a word, the educational program of St. Petersburg State University “Oil and Gas Business” aims at preparing a previously unseen hybrid of a scientist and businessman, successful and creative, capable of effectively solving various tasks of the fuel and energy complex.
